Michael Charles Riddell, PhD
Dr. Riddell is a Full Professor in the School of Kinesiology and Health Science and Muscle Health Research Center at York University in Toronto. He is also a Senior Scientist at LMC Diabetes and Centricity Research in Toronto where he leads clinical studies on glucose management strategies for exercise in type 1 diabetes. Dr. Riddell did his PhD in physiology/ pharmacology from McMaster University in Canada where he conducted studies on hypoglycemia prevention during exercise in type 1 diabetes. He completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Dr. Mladen Vranic (a trainee of Dr. Charles H. Best who helped to discover insulin with Dr. Banting). Dr. Riddell has published over 250 peer-reviewed journal articles, 30 book chapters, and one patient guidebook on the metabolic and hormonal responses to exercise and stress in diabetes. He has authored several international guidelines on exercise and diabetes and he engages with numerous community-based diabetes and sports educational programs that enhance diabetes self-care behaviors in people living with type 1 diabetes. Professor Riddell is listed on the Stanford University List of Top 2% of all Researchers Worldwide. Michael has been living with type 1 diabetes since age 15.
Lauren Turner, PhD Candidate, York University
Lauren Turner is a PhD student in Kinesiology and Health Sciences at York University. Her research primarily revolves around investigating the effects of exercise on glucose levels using continuous glucose monitoring and other body-worn sensors in individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Lauren is currently conducting various clinical trials at York University and at Centricity Research in Toronto with a focus on exercise and new insulins, exercise and hybrid closed-loop therapy, and the impact of diabetes and glycemia on muscular endurance. She has also performed extensive data analyses of the Type 1 Diabetes Exercise Initiative (T1-DEXI) — the largest observational exercise study in adults and adolescents living with T1D. Having lived with T1D since 2018, Lauren is not only a dedicated runner and marathoner, but also passionate about empowering fellow individuals with T1D to enhance their glucose management during physical activity.
David Kerr MBChB DM FRCPE
Professor Kerr is Senior Investigator Diabetes Research and Digital Health Equity, at Sutter Center for Health Systems Research, and Adjunct Professor, Dept Electrical and Computer Engineering, Rice University. He serves on the Scientific Advisory Board, PATHS-UP (https://pathsup.org) Research Committee, and the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (https://www.diabeteseducator.org). Previously, he was the Director of Research and Innovation at the Sansum Diabetes Research Institute (SDRI) in Santa Barbara, California. Whilst working as a Consultant Physician at the Bournemouth Diabetes &Endocrine Center in the UK, he co-created Excarbs.net.
Helen Partridge
Dr Helen Partridge trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical school, London. After completion of specialist training in Wessex she completed a clinical fellowship in Advanced diabetes technologies and therapeutics at University of Toronto, Canada. She was appointed as a Consultant in Diabetes at Royal Bournemouth and Christchurch Hospital in 2013 and is also a visiting fellow at Bournemouth University.
Dr Partridge is lead for the insulin pump service, renal diabetes service and is part of the young persons’ diabetes service. She is also lead for the Bertie structured education course and led on the development of the award winning, QISMET accredited www.bertieonline.org.uk. She has an active interest in research and innovation in type 1 diabetes and is clinical lead in the ComPASSION project working with colleagues in the eating disorders service to support people with type 1 diabetes and an eating disorder.
