Our aim at ExCarbs is to help people with diabetes using insulin to feel comfortable with taking up exercise – our advice is not aimed at elite athletes but hopefully covers the basic rules for most people living with diabetes.
Remember that if exercise is sustained you will become much more sensitive to the effect of insulin and the dose needed will fall which is a really good result!
Regular exercise has many benefits for people who need to take insulin everyday. For many people the main barrier to participating in exercise is being unsure of coming up with a personal strategy to avoid lows (hypos) – that is why planning is key.
Start PlanningThe impact of exercise on blood glucose (BG) levels is influenced by the type and intensity of the activity, and duration of exercise. Working these out beforehand makes planning so much easier.
There is a need to develop a personal strategy to minimize the risk of high and low blood glucose levels before, during and after exercise – everyone is different but there are some simple ways to start.
Learn NowThis is a rapidly changing field where hearing about people’s individual experiences can help others. Increasingly technology is going to help people on insulin start exercise and improve their fitness – we aim to highlight what is new and what is hot.
